FIRST project year 2009/2010| 7th - 11th October 2009 | First meeting in Spain | |
Our first meeting of the new Comenius project "Different numbers - Same values" led us to Salamanca in Spain.
Three teachers of our school, Brigitte Frischauf, Evamaria Pilles and Edith Schifer met our partners there to start the project and discuss the project details.
We were given a warm welcome in the Spanish school and we were glad to meet our English partners again and to welcome our new partners from France and Martinique into the project.
Salamanca is a wonderful town with many beautiful places and buildings, for example, the old University and the amazing Cathedral. We spent hours on discussing and organising the project work, looking for suitable dates for the next meetings for each of us and also enjoyed walking through the town. We succeeded finally and together we developed some good ideas to make this project an interesting part of our school life.
We are now looking forward to working together to prove that "Different numbers - Same values"

| 17th - 21st March 2010 | Second meeting in Austria | |
The second meeting of the new Comenius project "Different numbers - Same values" took place in Wiener Neustadt, Austria.
Two teachers with four students from each partner school came to see not only school life but also the sights of Wiener Neustadt and Vienna. We all made a visit to a school decorated in different styles that the visitors found interesting.
A joint Austrian dance was rehearsed by Anneliese and the students were enthusiastic about doing it. They put on an excellent performance with teachers taking part.
Luckily, there was still snow in the mountains, therefore, we could all spend a day in the snow with lots of activities. Everybody enjoyed that day trip.

Meeting:
All participants were happy with what had happened so far. There was one problem, the website with the common logo, created by the Spanish partners, was not updated. As it was half done, we agreed that Pilton School will continue the work on it. Furthermore, we agreed and confirmed the next meetings in England, France, Martinique and England again. We also agreed on work on a famous person/thing connected to our country. All these arrangements were agreed by the various partners.

The exchange arrangements with the students went very well. Everybody was very happy with his or her partners and host families.

| 5th - 10th May 2010 | Trip to Austria | |
Another group of 2 teachers and 4 students from Braunton School visited Europa Hauptschule, Wiener Neustadt, in May. The hosts enjoyed receiving the guests and looked after them very well, not to say they spoiled their guests.
The students took part in school life and lessons and worked in groups with the Austrian students. Also the group did sightseeing in Wiener Neustadt and Vienna and they saw the Lipizzaner horses and many other interesting sights like the House of Music, Prater Wheel and Castle of Forchtenstein.
It was an unforgettable day in Vienna. For the weekend, the students stayed with their hosts and did many activities.

| 9th - 13th June 2010 | Third meeting in England | |
The third and last meeting of the first year of the Comenius project took place in Braunton, England.
We were given a warm welcome and were glad to meet our English partners again and all the other partners from France, Martinique and Spain.
Again, the students stayed with families whereas the teachers stayed in a hotel in Ilfracombe that time. We were taken back and forth from the hotel to school and to different places. So the English partners were very much involved with driving.
The programme, including surf lessons, a trip to Exeter, a cruise along the wonderful North Devon coast, a stroll in Barnstaple and the trip to Lynmouth was fantastic. As a common work, the students created an artistic big poster with Zoe, the art teacher. Many students became friends and exchanged their e-mail addresses and have still contact.
Meeting:
All participants were pleased with what had happened so far. There is still the website problem that Pilton School has tried to solve and would continue working on it.
For the final meeting in 2011 - organised by Pilton School, England, we confirmed on a performance of 5-10 minutes (song, play, etc) with a presentation to an invited audience.
Furthermore we agreed and confirmed the next meetings.

Comenius Meeting:
We spent hours discussing and organising the project work that developed from some good ideas to make this project an interesting part of our school life.
We were given a warm welcome in the Lycée, which is housed in a castle with a big park around. The school has more than 1400 students spread in different houses.. We were glad to meet all the other partners from England, Martinique and Spain and their students.
Again, the students stayed with families whereas the teachers stayed in a hotel in Aparjan, about 10km away from Ville-du-Bois. As there were no public means of transport, we were taken back and forth from the hotel to school by taxis, which were very expensive.
The programme to Paris was broad and covered many things but it was great.
We saw the most important building such as Sacré Coeur; Notre Dame; the Opera House; Arc the Triomphe; the Champs Élysées with the famous and expensive shops, the Eiffel Tower at night and we went on a boat cruise. It was impressive and the boys and girls enjoyed it very, very much. It was almost midnight when we arrived at home and the students were exhausted. In true Comenius spirit all the students played games and did competitions together.

| 19th - 27th March 2011 | Second meeting in Martinique | |
The second meeting of the second year of the Comenius project led us to Fort-de-France, Martinique, this time.
Proverb: "If you take a trip, then you'll experience something".
The fifth Comenius Meeting led us to La Martinique, a Caribbean Island. Three girls, Kimberly Reichardt (2b), Caroline Keresztesy (3a), Christina Sedlmayer (4b) and one boy, Manuel Blümel (4a) together with their Principal Mr. Waldherr and their teachers Mrs. Pilles and Mrs. Frischauf, were allowed to participate in this long overseas journey.
The students prepared an interesting PowerPoint presentation and did it in English very well. Of course there was not only work, but also a lot of sightseeing and activities. To get to know the Caribbean way of life, the students stayed with families, who looked after them so well and even gave presents to their guests. The Martinique team organised fantastic trips like visiting a sugar cane plantation, a rum distillery, a main export, and a town called St. Pièrre, which was destroyed in 1902 by a terrible eruption. Within 3 minutes 33.000 inhabitants were killed, only one person had survived. How sad. Another fantastic place was an arboretum with a variety of exotic palm trees, plants and flowers. What about the sea? Clear, and about 27°C - how wonderful. The students were given scuba diving lessons and a "Yole" ride - a traditional sport. Unfortunately one week passed by too quickly and we had to leave the wonderful island. I am sure that one or more friendships started and I hope it will develop and be long lasting.

And some very impressive video clips !
The English speech to the students from Mr. Brian Border.
In 1963 two scientists James Watson and Francis Crick were awarded a Noble prize for their work in making one of the most important scientific discoveries of our time - the discovery of DNA. DNA contains the instructions that inform other cells of what they need to do and how they need to behave. They are the basic building blocks of almost all life on Earth.
The discovery of DNA has, over the past 40 years, impacted on many other fields of study including History and Palaeontology. Investigations of the DNA of fossils found in the Great Rift Valley of Eastern Africa have led to some incredible theories. Many scientists now believe that mankind is descended from approximately 6 or 8 individual females because the DNA of the Human Race is almost exactly the same except for a few differences that can be divided into a small number of groups.
What this says to me is that Humans are fundamentally the same but have differences that make us all individuals.
This, for me, is the reason why the Comenius Project is so important. It allows us to understand each other better, celebrating our common heritage whilst acclaiming our cultural differences and thereby becoming more tolerant and accepting. It helps demolish negative, unhelpful stereotypes through personal contact and friendship, encouraging us to see ourselves as an individual who is part of the international family of mankind.
The Austrian speech to the students from Mrs. Pilles and Frischauf.
In Austria we have a saying - "to look over the plate". It means to look beyond our won world, to broaden our horizons. This is why we are part of the Comenius project - to enable some of our students to see that there is a world beyond our own country and that world is important to us all.
Thank you for the opportunity for our young people to look over the plate and experience a part of your beautiful world.

| 8th - 12th June 2011 | Third meeting in England | |
The third and final meeting of the Comenius project took place in Pilton, England.
As always, we were given a warm welcome and were glad to meet all the partners again.
The students stayed with families, which is now a Comenius tradition, whereas the teachers stayed in an hotel in Barnstaple within walking distance to Pilton School and town, which was very convenient. The programme, included a treasure hunt, surf lessons, a trip to Exeter and Lynmouth; of which was great.
As a common work, the students prepared two traditional dishes and shared with the partners. Austria prepared bread and "Grammelschmalz", a kind of spicy lard from the local wine areas called "Heuriger" and "Wiener Schnitzel" with potato salad. From what we could see, everybody liked the Austrian food - we also liked the food from our partners.
Further work was a display from our town and area.
Unfortunately, there was not enough time to present all the work the students did, for example, their opinion about the Comenius programme, nor the common song, which Helga has prepared. Maybe we should think of adding one more day of the visit! The students did exchange their e-mail addresses and are still in contact with each other.
We applied for another Comenius project and luckily were accepted again together with the two English Schools, France and Martinique. Unfortunately, Spain, Poland and Norway were not accepted. What a pity.

For me the Comenius project gives me the possibility to look over the plate. It means to broaden my horizon and to get into contact with other people.
Marco: 12 years old
I have Bosnian roots and live in Austria now. I learnt from previous visitors that being in the Comenius group is very interesting. You meet pupils from other countries and you have to speak English. So I speak three languages.
Lisa: 12 years old
I think the Comenius project is a good idea. Many teachers and pupils from different countries come to one place and work together and have great fun. It's interesting to try different food. One of our traditional dish is WIENER SCHNITZEL.
David: 12 years old
I have Serbian roots and I live in Austria now. So it is very important to know the language and the culture.
I am interested in getting to know this part of England and to practise my English
Waiting for departure at the airport.
